NAKED STATE art residency produced by Arts Unfold, and taking place at Bare Oaks Family Naturist Park August 15-24, announces its multidisciplinary artists from around the globe. First Nations, and also from as far as South Korea, Hong Kong, Ukraine, The Netherlands and across Canada and the United States, they will explore the human nude and a “naked state.”
For ten days, the artists and residency Facilitator live as *naturists (in the nude) within the naturist community of Bare Oaks Family Naturist Park to create works that explore questions such as: What is nudity? Does stripping away clothing rid us of class, gender, and personal expression?; Do the connections between our bodies and the land change when nude? Is nudity always sexual? What is the role of the nude in historical and contemporary art?; Is an animal with fur naked?; and, Is there a natural state for human being?
Natalie Légère, First Nations painter in New-Brunswick, will be digitally document herself interacting with light, fabrics, and autobiographic text; Philippa Hajdu, living in Aurora Ontario, will create paintings exploring the older women as sexual being; Unu Sohn, who is Korean, born in New York and “from” Hong Kong, will incorporate unstretched canvas and photography to visualize vestiges of interactions between the body and everyday spaces; Yelena Myshko, a Ukrainian/Dutch performance artist, will explore the limits of art-historic body language; Young Ju Lee, from South Korea, will paint new sensations of her naked body parts. For details on the artists visit NakedState.ca/artists-2019.
This thematic and programmed residency consists of facilitation by multimedia artist Teresa Ascencao, a naturism seminar with Stéphane Deschenes, artist talks, workshops and open studios, and a special workshop by David Frankovich, an artist based in Helsinki and Toronto working in performance and experimental media. The closing show is on Saturday August 24, whereby artists present their creative and naked explorations to the public.
